Special unit "Kraken" is a separate reconnaissance and subversive unit of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

The special unit was formed by veterans of the "AZOV" regiment, officers of the GUR MOU, ultras and volunteers in March 2022 in Kharkiv, the unit consists of five battalions and has the size of a regiment.

The unit is named after the Kraken, a mythical giant monster that brings death to its enemies.

The special unit is headed by officers of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. One of the commanders of the special unit are Kostyantyn Nemichev and Serhiy Velichko.

From March to October 2022 inclusive, in the Kharkiv region with the participation of the "Kraken" special unit, the following were liberated: Vilkhivka, Lisne, Ruska Lozova, Pytomnyk, Belogorivka (Luhansk region), Verbivka, Balaklia, Borodoyarske, Morozivka, Savyntsi, Dovhalivka, the left-bank part Kupyansk, Podoli, Kupyansk-Vuzlovy, Kivsharivka, Novoosynovka, Hlushkivka, Kolisnikivka, Kislivka, Kotlyarivka.

Also, the unit took part in the battles for Kharkiv, Dementiivka, Stary Saltiv, Hrakovo, Zaliznychne, Kutuzivka, Velyki Prohody.

In January 2023, he took part in battles near Soledar in the Donetsk region, and in March - in Bakhmut.

According to Kyryl Budanov, head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, "Kraken" is "one of the most combat-capable units" in Ukraine.

In May 2024, the special unit takes part in the battle for Chasiv Yar.
